The why, our approach & the team behind
The Well
WHOLE PERSON, WHOLE FAMILY, WHOLE COMMUNITY
The Well boldly acknowledges the mental health crisis and challenges we face. Viewing the needs of people from a systems perspective approach, The Well provides high-quality care for people who can’t afford it. With this approach to building community partnerships, we ensure that they are equipped with the proper resources and feel empowered to provide care to those they serve. We develop holistic wellness programs, by partnering with agencies along the way to more effectively meet our goals and produce positive outcomes.
WHY THE TIME IS NOW
Currently suicide remains the 2nd leading cause of death for youth ages 10-14 and young adults 25-34 years old. Along with homicide being the 2nd leading cause of death for youth ages 15-24 years old and suicide as their 3rd leading cause of death. Mental illness continues to be the leading cause of disability more than any other group of illnesses, including cancer and heart disease. Over 60% of Americans living with a mental illness never seeks treatment. Moreover, depending on people’s social determinants of health; the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks, will determine how and if they can obtain access to care. Our community is in a crisis and The Well has created a process that removes the burden of the illness from the people, and families we serve, and strengthens the resources in our community.
Our approach
The Well has adopted the Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual Model in our approach to whole wellness. This is a holistic approach that acknowledges the interaction between physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects to patient care and patient well-being (Beng, 2004). With this, The Well places emphasis on assessing and treating a person from a holistic perspective, conceptualizing the person and their physical and mental health needs within a social context. We also assess how they are affected by their environment and how their spirituality influences their overall sense of well-being.
This is important to understand what's beneath the surface of one’s pain and suffering. Research has provided evidence that the complexities of the interactions between the physical (i.e., biological), psychological, social and spiritual aspects of the client’s lived experience and the need to assess and intervene in all four domains.
In the spirit of obtaining optimal health and wellness as a whole, genuinely holistic health care must address the totality of the person's relational existence physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually.
